How can museums be wonderful places to work? And why is this important?

In the words of management consultant Peter Drucker, “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Yet the museum field has no shared vocabulary, strategies, or resources for improving internal culture.

Culture Shift is a dedicated, small group space for museum leaders who are committed to the real work of changing organizational culture. Over the course of eight 90-minute virtual sessions we will discuss both theory and practical tips for meaningful change. Each participant will be asked to conduct an internal assessment of their museum’s culture and to design, implement, and evaluate strategies for shifting the needle and making lasting change. See full program outline here.

FAQs

Is this virtual? Yes!

Is this a class? Sort of. Participants will learn information about organizational culture, how it’s created and assessed, and strategies for change. But they will also be given assigments that lead to direct, manageable, positive impact in their organizations.

Do I have to be a museum director to participate? No – members of museum leadership teams are invited to participate. However, they must have the explicit and active support of the museum director, in order to leverage this opportunity to make real change.

Who are you and what is your background in this area? I am a former museum director who has spent the last year researching organizational culture in order to develop tools and strategies to help museums. I just published this report. I’m also an experienced educator and facilitator who has successfully led numerous groups, virtually and in person, in collaborative learning.

Why did you develop this course? Museums are in crisis – many are facing shrinking attendance, fundraising challenges, unionization, and legal and ethical issues related to collections. You need your whole team working together to address these issues. Improving organizational culture leads to a team that is all “rowing in the same direction.”

Why is this worth the cost? You will leave this program with real, effective, targeted changes to your museum culture in process (“in process” because real change takes time), and the tools to continue improving museum culture after we are done.

What if my museum can’t afford this, but I really want to participate? There is an option to split the cost over two years (September 2024 and February 2025). If that is not sufficient, contact me and let’s talk – I’m at rebeccashulman@museumquestions.com.
